Between November and April, the deep waters off Mirissa on Sri Lanka’s southern coast become the stage for one of nature’s most humbling spectacles, the regular passage of blue whales, the largest animals ever to have lived on earth, moving through channels just kilometres from the shore. Our whale-watching excursions depart at dawn aboard a comfortable, well-equipped vessel, with an experienced marine naturalist on board to identify species, provide context, and ensure that every interaction with the animals is conducted with full respect for their welfare and natural behaviour. Blue whales, sperm whales, fin whales and several species of dolphins are regularly sighted on these excursions, while flying fish, sea turtles and tropical seabirds add to the excitement of the journey across the open ocean. This is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences Sri Lanka offers, and one that stays with every guest long after they leave the water.
