Sri Lanka’s coastal waters harbour a magnificent underwater world of coral gardens, historic shipwrecks, sea turtle habitats and tropical marine life that reward both first-time snorkelers and experienced scuba divers in equal measure. The waters around Hikkaduwa, Pigeon Island near Nilaveli and the reefs of Kirinda near Yala are among the finest dive sites, offering visibility that can extend to 20 metres or more in the right conditions. Sea turtles, including green, hawksbill and leatherback species, are encountered, swimming with unhurried grace through warm, gin-clear water.
